Every career success story is unique. While there isn’t a magic answer for taking your career to the top, following these ten steps will get you headed up the corporate ladders.

1. Reassess your career. Is your career path well aligned with your priorities and interest? Do you posses, or can you acquire, the experience and education to be successful? If not, consider a lateral move and work your way up the ladders from there.

2. Clearly define your career goals. Only when you know exactly where it is you want to go, will you be able to map out your plan to get there, and climb theladders of life.

There is a law of physic that says, “Water seeks its own level.” That law confirms the fact that until a substance has completely filled the place that it is presently occupying, it cannot fill a larger vessel.

That is true in physic and its also true in life. Before attempting to fill or occupy a larger place in life, first we must completely fill the one that we are presently holding. It’s a fundamental axiom but one that is almost universally ignored.

Ambitious people want to move ahead. They want to be promoted or occupy a larger and more important role. So they dream, hope and make plans and nothing happens. Nothing happens because they did not know or forgot that before they can fill a larger place, first, the one presently being occupied must be filled.

Contrary to popular beliefs, there is plenty of room at the top. It is the bottom wrung that is crowded and overfilled. Small and large corporations and institutions have to pay head hunters to fill top executive positions. Leaders are needed in every sphere of our economic world. There is a vacuum at that level that is begging to be filled.

The opportunities are there but the viable candidates are few. Why is that? It is due to the fact that a fundamental lesson has not been learned yet. That lesson is the fact that before aspiring to a larger place in life, the one that is being occupied must be completely be filled.

There is a saying that says that you can’t keep a good man down. When someone exceed the level of competence necessary to fill a position, the one at the next level will automatically open up. It’s a law of life. Water seeks it own level so does man.

What you do and how you do it cannot be separated from who you are. The power that be knows that. Outstanding performances leave clues. . Exceptional workers shine. They are noticed and promoted.

No matter what your occupation is, it provides you with the opportunity to express yourself. It’s the best way to broadcast what you are all about and to tell the world what you are made of. So, if you want to climb the corporate ladder, first you must totally fill your present position and thus show that you have the potential to fill a larger role.

In today’s competitive world, being good at what you do simply means that you can easily be replaced. Being excellent will not get you a promotion. You were already expected to be excellent. If you want to climb, if you want to be singled out to be promoted, you must be outstanding. That’s were the money is.

If you read biographies you will find out that most of the top positions in the corporate world and in the entrepreneurial world are filled with people who started at the bottom of the ladder. They gave great performances, they were noticed and gravitated to their level – that is, to the top echelons.

Being good at what a person does is dime a dozen and will not get you anywhere. Being excellent is only what is expected and will attract no attention. But being outstanding is what opens doors. It’s the way to success, it’s the way to the top. So, if you are ambitious and want to succeed, go all out, play hard and totally fill the place that you are presently holding, be outstanding and soon, the world will by your oyster.

If you really want to move fast up the Corporate Ladder, you must know and apply the Insider Secrets of the Corporate Machiavelli.

The following are simple but essential tips that can get you whatever you want; make you visible, admirable, progressive and powerful in your workplace, company or organization. Not for the squeamish. Enjoy it!

First, you must be excellent at the job you were hired to do. Be diligent, proactive and resourceful. Be the best at the things you are assigned to do. That way you make yourself difficult and stressful for the company or organization to do away with. When given an assignment, be sure to always give adequate feedback on your progress or even lack of it. Always give results, so you never have to give reasons for failure.

Cultivate a positive, friendly and cheerful personality. Learn to share what you have. Look-out for opportunities to assist others, especially at critical moments when it could make all the difference to their well being. That way you create lasting positive impressions in their minds that make them wish you well, and want to see you move ahead. You ride on their goodwill!

Do not forget to pay genuine and sincere compliments to those who deserve them. Always say nice words and show appreciation when others look good, get promoted, win prizes and awards, or do you a favour. Be sincere and courteous. Courtesy costs you nothing, but it takes you a long way! Make yourself visible, desirable, and admirable and a great pal to work with.

Always dress well (clean, smart, and for your job) because first, it makes you positively visible: you never have a second chance of making a first impression. And secondly: the way you dress determines the way you are addressed.

Be a man or woman of quality. Always look neat, smart and full of energy. Cultivate an above average knowledge of fabrics, colour combinations and styles. Abide by your company’s dress code, if any; otherwise dress the same way the senior boss man or woman or the top management staff in your organization do. That way you identify with their personality, and they will not fail to notice you!

Be prepared. On a personal level, adopt a program of continuous self-development as your secret career policy. That way you are prepared and ready when any opportunity to move up the corporate ladder knocks. Look ahead in your company, organization or industry, and prepare yourself for opportunities and positions that may become vacant, available or in hot demand in the near future. The better prepared you are, the luckier you get! Time and chance happen to us all.

If possible, get your boss to be your mentor. But please, keep to the rules of mentorship. Do not waste your mentor’s time or bother him/her with your financial problems. Rather, get close by asking him/her to recommend books and articles you can read, or audio CDs you can listen to. Give your mentor some feedback on what you gained, and then request for more. That way you indirectly communicate to your boss that you are a protégée, eager to learn and grow; and that you look up to him/her for success within the organization.

Get to understand the power structure within your organization, and play accordingly. In most cases, the organizational chart or organogram does not give a true picture of the power equation within an organization. Find out the really powerful persons within (or even outside) the organization, who are responsible for most decision-making.

What many workers do not know is that many boards and committees meet just to ratify decisions already taken by a few powerful individuals within the organization. In many cases, there is a big difference between the visible corporate Table of Organization (TOO) and the invisible Table of Power (TOP). You must therefore discern the real power brokers within your organization and align yourself accordingly, while making sure that your loyalty to everyone above you on the corporate ladder (TOO) is never in doubt. Play smart!

In the power games of the corporate world, others can destroy you either because they hate you or they fear you, or both. Therefore, be wise and play safe. Be courteous. Bury your pride! Avoid flaunting your abilities and talents in such a way as to arouse resentment and envy in your superiors or peers. Otherwise, you may unknowingly lose their support, and immediately become a target for a PHD (pull him down) award. Whenever necessary, protect yourself by feigning ignorance or even daftness. But don’t overdo it! No power player is a fool.

Finally, be smart! Always obey the first Law of Power: “Never outshine the master”. Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents and abilities or you might accomplish the direct opposite: inspire fear and insecurity. Make your bosses appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power!

Watch out for Corporate Machiavelli 2, coming soon. As a Prince of the Corporate Wars, you will not only enjoy it, you will certainly USE it, to your greater advantage. Don’t miss it! See you at the top!

7 Tips For Moving Up The Corporate Ladder

by admin on April 21, 2010

For both new grads and seasoned career warriors, moving up the corporate ladder is always a challenge. The 7 tips below will help make your career climb both more efficient and successful.

o Ideas - Never fail to showcase your ideas, which can positively affect your company. Always try to learn new things and never be satisfied by just doing what is assigned. Do not shy away from sharing your ideas – and if someone laughs at your ignorance, just turn that into something positive. Always invite the feedback of your bosses and other senior employees, as the information you get can lead to better and more innovative ideas.

o Impact - Always accept difficult projects and then work hard to complete them. This way, you can create an impression on management. Taking on highly challenging projects communicates that you are an above average employee.

o Impeccable - Your language and style of dress should always reflect your true personality. Unfortunately, in the corporate world you are judged all the time. People judge you by the way you talk and dress. If your company does not have a dress code, then you can adopt one for yourself and dress using your common sense. Impeccable dressing doesn’t necessarily mean wearing expensive clothing, it means dressing well and decently.

o Independent - Work independently – because when you work with minimal supervision it allows your boss to concentrate on other things. Always be sure to update your boss on your day-to-day activities and progress.

o Initiative – Take the initiative to start something new. It does not have to be always work oriented and sometimes it can be related to fun or an informal activity. Start a group that might like to explore new restaurants every Friday after work. Positive initiation is always noticed and can help you to move up the corporate ladder.

o Interest - Reveal your interest in company initiatives and always be involved in your department’s work. Never project cynical behavior regarding initiatives made by the company. Always be involved in the company’s initiatives.

o Intangible - Around the office, do thing to ease the burdens of others. For example, helping your colleague or volunteering to cover up during someone’s illness. Take on extra projects on when your boss seems burdened with work. A positive attitude always yields good results.

Following the 7 tips above will make your superiors sit up and take notice – and you will find that your career climb may not be as difficult as you once imagined.

Corporate Ladder vs Home Business

by admin on April 14, 2010

Most people are preprogrammed into the corporate world by our environment, education, society and our parents. It’s true our parents were brought-up to think that everyone should get a good education and enter the business world by working for some corporation. This guarantees a steady pay check and provides opportunity to advance your life. You’ll start at the bottom of the ladder working 40 plus hours a week answering to your supervisors. You’ll compete against other employees to make a good impression with your boss, with hopes of a raise in salary or a promotion or even a bonus. Personalities will clash, arguments are common, back stabbing exists and the fighting doesn’t go unnoticed. You’ll be promised the world by the corporate officers, whom look after themselves, only because they’ve climbed the ladder. Your new money making idea will be stolen by your boss, so he can reap the benefits. You’ll spend years fighting your own way up the ladder to find out the company is selling, or maybe out of business, or the top corporate executives have been embezzling the company profits. Remember the ones you were promised for your bonus and salary raise.

However, the corporate job has its benefits. You have a steady pay check. They typically provide medical benefits and paid vacation time. Some companies offer a retirement package, 401k program. Some companies provide automobiles with free gas and expense accounts. You even get a very nice title that looks good on a business card. The corporate world is where 90% of the population receives its income. The education programs, colleges and universities, prepare us for the corporate world. We exit with education degrees; associates, bachelor, master and doctorate degrees. Each degree provides the individual with the necessary education to enter a corporation at a particular level of the ladder. Each level has a corresponding salary. Regardless of what level you enter the corporate ladder, you will always answer to someone and you must prove yourself. In fact, you must prove yourself every day.

Home businesses are becoming more popular because people have experienced the corporate world. Home businesses are providing opportunities that many individuals didn’t know existed. Women that stay home to raise their children are finding out that part time they can run a business from home. People are realizing that they really don’t fit in the corporate world and open a home business. People realize that the benefits to a home business are quite rewarding; no traffic, no weather limitations, NO BOSS, no employees to fight with. Since the inception of the computer and the internet, individuals find running a home business is incredible easy. Everything is automated and in many cases you have no contact with other people. However, there is plenty of opportunity to communicate with other people all across the world. You’re not confined with just the people of the corporation. You can converse with the entire globe.

People that have started their own home business receive more gratification with running their own company than managing someone else’s. Their schedule is flexible to meet their own requirements. They can spend more time with their families and friends and doing the things which make them happy. They vacation in exotic places and longer than the corporate company allows. They give themselves raises and bonuses and don’t worry about embezzlement from employees. Their salaries are higher than they could ever receive from a corporate company. People have increased their salaries to six and seven figure incomes.

The corporate ladder or home business is up to each individual to determine their own destiny. You can follow the preprogrammed mechanism or create your own destiny.

So, you’ve been working in the same position for several years and now feel the time is right to elevate your level of responsibility along with your title and salary. However, with this being your first time attempting to move into a more prominent role, you have no idea where to start.

Many people are in your position and also wonder what steps they should take to move up the corporate ladder. One thing you can do is stay on top of current trends and educational requirements in your field. But once you’ve fulfilled these tasks and are ready to apply for a job, you’ll need a great resume to get your foot in the door. Let’s look at some ways to create the right resume to match your accelerated career goals.

Try a Functional Resume Style

One recommended way to create a resume that appeals to higher-level recruiters and hiring managers is to shine a light on the skills you’ve acquired. You can get this done by using a functional resume format.

For example, if you were to use a functional format to describe your skills as an IT tech, instead of listing each job you’ve had year after year, you would focus on specific skills. By creating headings for each skill (ex. Software Development) you would be able to describe in detail all of the software you’ve developed for each company you’ve worked for. Using a functional resume in this way can help you expand on each skill you possess and show the employer your versatility as an employee.

Highlight Your Outside Achievements and Awards

Another great way to make your resume appeal to upper-level recruiters and hiring managers is by using a section to highlight anything you’ve achieved outside of your hired role. This works especially well if you focus on roles that have required you to act as a supervisor or manager of others.

For example, let’s say at your current company you have worked as a training coordinator for 5 years. However, in your spare time you founded and led a diversity awareness group that consisted of 10 volunteer employees. With this group, you used presentations and focus groups to demonstrate the need for diversity awareness in a work setting. By noting such a huge accomplishment on your resume, you show the hiring manager that you’re able to successfully develop and manage projects outside of your hired role.

Staying at Your Current Employer?

If you want to move up the corporate ladder while remaining at your current employer, it is a good idea to create a resume similar to one you would create for an outside employer. Why? Because it is very likely that the hiring manager won’t have any idea what you’ve accomplished on the job. But don’t feel bad about this duty as there are benefits to applying in-house, including being able to use respected employees for recommendations, and noting in-house training programs that are very relevant to the company.

Working your way up the corporate ladder can be an exciting ride – especially when you come equipped with the right tools. By showing up with a great resume and even better attitude, you’ll see in no time that your ride to the top will move smoother than you could ever imagine.

Local Truck Driving Job

by admin on March 29, 2010

local truck driving jobLocal Truck Driving Job

Local Truck Driving Job – Recession or not, one thing is for sure: goods and products need to be delivered, and this is one of the reasons why local truck driver jobs continue to be in high demand. The transportation of so many things  is all-important for the businesses and for the general economy. So if you are looking for truck driver jobs, you are in for lots of employment opportunities.

Another piece of good news is that you do not have to have any specialized or extensive educational background to qualify as a truck driver. You will find that employers usually do not require job applicants to hold college degrees; however, it is also true that many will prefer candidates to have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Local Truck Driving Job | Driver Age

Another thing that contributes to the demand for local truck driving jobs is that many truckers are approaching retirement age, and that quite a number of them choose to leave the field altogether after just a few years. This is good news if you are looking for a job as a driver in the trucking/transportation industry. But keep in mind that a truck driving job isn’t all a bed of roses.

For one thing, you have to content with its physical demands; sometimes you may have to lift some of your cargo physically. You also have to deal with the fact that you will be on the road for long periods of time, driving in all weather conditions, especially if you get long-haul jobs. Loneliness and boredom are likewise two of the most common complaints of long-haul or cross-country truckers.

The good news is that longer drives typically pay more than local jobs. And while it is true that you should meet delivery deadlines, you can usually structure your schedule so that the goal gets accomplished.

In the workplace, it is not always enough to be the only one who is successful. You need to climb high and help your fellows follow your success up the corporate ladder. This article will discuss how to act as the boss, keep good employees, maintain relationships, and practice checks and balances inside the workplace.

The boss’s large and comfortable swivel chair evokes power. It is powerful enough for any employee to desire and aspire for such coveted position. But what if that employee knew about how designers and suppliers fussed over the finest details in that plush office? Don’t you think you would be worried as the boss? Don’t you think you would be the center of envy in the workplace?

Always back you people. For example, in an industry combining marketing, sales, manufacturing, and supply, a group handling all these functions might be too big to call a team. But at the end of the day, businesses, no matter how big, are all driven by team work.

Training your employees is always essential to keep them competitive. But training alone is not enough either. You need to emphasize team effort by supporting and empowering each and every individual in the team.
After all, good people are always hard to find. And they are harder to keep. The trick to keeping them loyal is to treat them as partners, not as employees or subordinates.

Being the boss does not mean you should be intimidating and scares the hell out of your people. Empowering your people, maybe mostly younger than you are and less experienced, is the way to inspiring them to do better at work rather than betraying you to earn one’s spot to the top.

No one that is any good at making great hiring decisions hires someone because of what a candidate has done or what their Internet presence is. WHAT? That’s right. Candidates are hired because of what the hiring authority believes you can do! They develop a belief about what you can do by understanding how you accomplished what you have done. This needs to be addressed upfront in your resume.

Let’s start first with the need to hire someone in the first place. Any job that is created exists to produce against a set of business objectives in a way that will have concrete impact on business metrics. Nobody is hired to produce effort. Everyone is hired to produce results.

Back calculating from the set of business objectives a position is chartered to achieve will imply a specific set of executive capabilities, skills and acumen that a candidate must possess to have a chance at successfully executing against the business objectives the position is chartered to achieve.

All what you have done is to an employer is a sanity “check in the box” that confirms you have held the requisite scope & scale of responsibility that confirms the role they are trying to fill isn’t to big a step up in scope & scale of responsibility such that you’d be in over your head. For example, given an employment opportunity with $150M P&L responsibility role. Has your previous P&L responsibility maxed out at $15M, $50M, $100M, $250M, etc.? If you’re close to the level of responsibility, that’s just a check in the box that lets you play in the interview game.

What an employer needs to get to is how you have accomplished what you’ve done.

Example: “We need to fill a $150M P&L role that is chartered to grow this to $300M over the next 5 years. I see that you have grown a P&L from $75M to $250M. That’s great. Can you tell me exactly how you drove that outcome?”

Most executives fall flat on their face when attempting to answer a straight forward question like this by starting their response with, “Um, well, I uh…” not well thought out response follows. It doesn’t mean you don’t know – how – you drove an outcome. It simply means you’re not practiced at concisely articulating – how – you drove an outcome. Unfortunately, this does not leave the best impression with the person interviewing you.

This all too common unfortunate situation should have been addressed all the way back when you were actually writing your resume.

100% of the resumes recruiters see fail at concisely articulating an executive’s value proposition. That value proposition is a combination of two inseparable components: The specific quantified impact you have had on business metrics by achieving measurable objectives COMBINED WITH the specific set of executive capabilities, skills and acumen you leveraged to drive that measurable impact. When a resume lacks either of these two inseparable components, it doesn’t answer questions about your unique executive value proposition – it creates them. A resume should not create questions; it should answer questions.

By addressing these issues upfront when writing your resume, you will not only be exposed to more and better opportunities, you will be exposed to opportunities over someone that has better career experience than you, but has done a great job of keeping his/her value proposition hidden in his/her resume. In addition, you will be practiced at concisely articulating responses to the interview question: “So tell me how you did that?” As a result, you will leave an infinitely better interview impression.

It all starts with your resume.
